Late night workouts

It is really tough to find time to run in the winter, and I’ve been staying late at work some nights when I’m super busy. I told Gary I was getting kind of depressed about not working out so much and starting to gain a lot of weight. He has been very supportive about forcing me to work out and I’m grateful for it. Last night, I finally got home around 8:30 and Gary offered to work out with me. He rode the stationary bike while I did a twenty minute video. It was one of those Biggest Loser videos and they are big on squatting and bending, which can be rough on the knees, so I sort of deviated from the routine here and there when it started to bother me. Feels ok today, and I’m in a better mood, so I am expecting to be able to get out of work on time and go running!

I signed up for my first 5k of the year! It’s in April in Maryland – my aunt and I are running it together. It’s called the Salisbury Zoo Stampede- it’s a 5k in a zoo!


Ice on the canal

I ran on the canal path today. It was so beautiful- the canal was frozen over (which always makes me think of one of my favorite Jimmy Eat World songs) and there were mini-icebergs floating down the river at a pretty quick clip. But DAMN it was cold! I ran out and back; on the way out, the wind was at my back and the sun was in my eyes. On the way back, there was no sun to warm my face and the wind that comes off the river was biting at my face, and most of my time was spent worrying whether my nose was running, because at that temperature, you really can’t feel much! It encouraged me to run a bit faster.

Today was a bit of a challenge- I’ve been running/walking in 1 minute intervals, and today I picked up where I left off in my running plan, with a five minute run and a five minute walk followed by 2min run/3min walk intervals. Starting off with a five minute run after taking it easy for so long was a little daunting but once I got past the second minute, I knew I could finish it. It’s only five minutes, after all, so it goes by pretty fast.

I had started a thread on the Nerd Fitness six week challenge, but haven’t made time to keep up with it. I would like to be more involved with the community there and make friends and whatnot but I know me, and I am not good at putting myself out there. I have to stop sitting around doing the same things I always do, because nothing changes that way.

Speaking of change, I started my third and final purchasing class this week. I took a train to New Brunswick. This is particularly incredible because I am so shy and nervous! I am scared of walking into a building I’ve never been in before. I even got on the wrong train (too early), realized my mistake, got off at the next stop and hopped on the right one without freaking out. I feel pretty amazing lately.



Ick ick ick

I’m sick. Ick ick ick. No running for me- no anything for me. Husband was sick with a wicked head /chest cold last week and I tried very hard to isolate him and take vitamin c and stay healthy but, alas, it has caught up to me. This means no Janathon this year. Oh well. Right now I feel too icky to care.

New Nerd Fitness Challenge

I fell off the Nerd Fitness bandwagon (I have used that phrase like, three time in the past five minutes. It needs to be stopped) last year after my first challenge but I am BACK FOR MORE, BABY!

This time around my goals are simple and should help me ease back into running while sorting things out in the new HQ (AKA our new house). I plan to run at least three times a week, and if I can’t run due to dark / cold / bears, I will do some other kind of cardio workout video for at least thirty minutes.

I plan to try out ALL THE PARKS in my area to test out some new running grounds and hopefully find something that is nighttime-running-friendly.

I am going to work on getting a journal or day planner of some sort to track my mileage and info about workouts and such. I want to be able to see a quick summary of mileage and this year I actually want to track mileage. I want to set a mileage goal, but I’m not really sure what kind of mileage I’m doing now.

I plan to take pictures during each run so I can update on the blog. Also, it might help me take some time to just enjoy what I’m doing.

I plan to only drink water on Tuesdays & Thursdays. I plan to find fifty geocaches in the next six weeks.

The Nerd Fitness community seems to be full of awesome nerdy people who are more into nerdy stuff like, Star Wars, comic books, superheroes, and maybe not so much into the nerdy stuff I am into – I didn’t really have any luck making friends last time around. Some of them really get into the RPG aspect of things, but I have a little more trouble letting my guard down and just going for stuff – I worry too much that people will think what I’m doing or what I like is stupid. I’m too much of a worry wart! Also, I like SO MANY THINGS. How in the world could I pick just one of my favorite movies/shows/fandoms┬áto roleplay? Where would I even start?
