Upping the mileage

I’ve been working on a 15 K program for a few weeks. I was hoping to run a 10 mile race in October, but I was just notified that their cut-off is 2 1/2 hours, which is way out of my league. I do NOT think I’ll be able to attain that in two months. So, maybe I’ll switch to a 10K program or go back to a 5K program to work on my speed. Bummer… I kind of just wanted a medal! Seriously, why don’t more 5Ks offer medals? Charge me 5$ more, I don’t care – take my money!

My sister and I went for a 3 mile run/ walk last week… it was mostly walking and talking, so I didn’t really care about the time, just getting the mileage in. It was a great day and a great run.

I did 1 mile on the treadmill on Wednesday. Trying to squeeze in more strength workouts. I’ve been logging my food for about two weeks, not trying to cut anything, just looking at my eating habits and trying to figure out where I can make some changes. To be honest, I think I just eat a bit too much. I never used to eat as much food for breakfast and lunch as some nutrition plans or recipes call for, so I’m going to sit down tonight, look over my log. I think I’m going to start eating when I’m hungry and not eating for flavor. Good luck with that, amirite?

I’m also starting some new medication and I’m a little anxious to see how it’s going to affect my body – will I gain weight? I started it today, and obviously, it’s too soon to tell if there are any changes. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Yogaaaaaaa and Painting

My friend Manisha is a fantastic person and an awesome yogi. I’ve been digging yoga lately. Yoga, meditation, creating mandalas. I signed up for this online yoga course to be completed at my own pace, and I’m really enjoying it so far.

The first class was about 25 minutes long. It doesn’t really have a warm up, so I’ll have to do my own next time. It was very simple and they had lots of options to scale up or down the poses, so it felt pretty easy. Lately, some of the longer yoga classes have left me feeling a little tense with some pain in my wrists from holding poses too long. I’ve been to a few classes in the past where you flow right from one pose to the next with very little time to hold, and that was way more up my alley.

Last night, I went to one of those paint & pour classes my friend Kim was teaching, but no one else showed up… so we free painted and it was so awesome. I painted an owl similar to one I found on Pinterest in one of those coloring pages for grown-ups. It really came out so much better than I was expecting – I’ll post pictures later. Kim’s painting was really awesome! I hope she does a class on it because I’d really like to paint it.

I haven’t run since my 2.5 mile run through the borough. I really want to keep up a good schedule of running every other day, but it gets really tough to squeeze it in around work, weather, and all the other things we have planned. Also, I have to set aside more time to run since it will take me damn near an hour to run 3 miles. I run out of hours in the day! Hey, that’s sort of a play on words. Running out of hours in the day.

Gone too long

So you know how life goes…it gets crazy busy and we lose track of things that we love, and I have clearly let my blog go ignored for too long. Instead of trying to catch up on where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to, let’s just jump right back into things.

I went for a run last night on the sidewalks of the nearby borough. It was pretty late in the day, 7:30-8:15 ish, but it’s been so hot here, you have to either run in the early AM or the late PM, and I am NOT a morning person. There are slight hills in the borough, so it was a good opportunity to ramp up the workout a little bit. I am going to have to trust Zombies, Run! to correctly calculate my mileage, so I can tell you that I nailed the first mile in 15:02, and the second mile was around 16:17. All together, 2.5 miles in 40:37. I feel like that’s pretty awesome. I’m so tempted to go back to the earlier posts here to read my complaints about being so slow at an 18-19 minute mile. I’m getting stronger and faster. But hey, it’s not going to stop me from feeling jealous when I see new or non-runners kicking my butt, with their sub 45 minute 5Ks. Soon….
